Life and health insurance producers can complete their continuing education requirements for their license renewal with this current and updated course. The course includes 20 hours of elective credits that will count towards your continuing education requirements. The course then moves into health insurance material and begins with a look at current health insurance and medical expense policies, including tax-advantaged contracts such as HSAs and more. As important as life insurance taxation, health insurance federal tax concerns are heavily explored in the next lesson. Next are anti-money laundering concerns and how insurers, agencies and producers are expected to handle money-laundering issues. An excellent follow-up to money-laundering is a lesson on data security and how it is used in business at-large and in the insurance industry. Florida Insurance Continuing Education Requirements

Resident Requirements

Resident insurance agents in Florida must complete continuing education every two years by the last day of their birth months to renew their licenses. If you have not been licensed for 24 months by the time the first expiration date falls, the initial deadline is extended by one year. For example, if you were born in June and became licensed in August 2023, your license renewal deadline would be June 30, 2026.

Any agent not specifically exempt must fulfill the CE requirements outlined below.

Producers and adjusters/public adjusters

If licensed for less than six years, you must complete 24 hours of CE, including:

  • 20 hours of elective CE courses
  • The 4-hour Law and Ethics Update course
  • Additional training if involved in the sale of Long-Term Care (LTC) insurance

If licensed for more than six years, you must complete 20 hours of CE, including:

  • 16 hours of elective CE courses
  • The 4-hour Law and Ethics Update course
  • Additional training if involved in the sale of Long-Term Care (LTC) insurance

Customer representatives, limited customer representatives, title agents*, and industrial fire and burglary agents

If you do not hold other lines of insurance, you must complete 10 hours of CE, including the 4-hour Law and Ethics Update course.

If you do not complete your CE requirements within 45 days of your license expiration, you will receive a Preliminary Notice of Noncompliance and a Settlement Stipulation. The notice will give you information on how to fulfill your requirements and proceed.

*Title agents may not substitute another state's CE requirements and must take Florida-approved courses. Reciprocity is not available.

Non-Resident Requirements

If your home state recognizes reciprocity with Florida, its CE requirements may be used to meet Florida insurance requirements. If you have not met the requirements of another state, or if that state does not recognize reciprocity, you must comply with Florida's policy.

Carryover of Excess CE

If you complete more than the required CE hours for any license term, up to 24 hours of excess credit will apply to the next term. Any additional credit accrued through Law and Ethics courses will apply to their subject-specific requirements.

Rules for Taking the Exam

To complete a CE course, you must pass a closed-book final exam with a score of at least 70%. If you do not pass on the first try, you may retake the exam as many times as you like until you pass.

Rules for Repeating a Course

You cannot repeat the same course within two years from the original completion date. To avoid this overlap, we provide multiple courses approved for various license types in Florida. We've also recently added alternate versions of our courses to offer you more flexibility when renewing your license. If you don't know which courses you already completed, please contact us. We are happy to help!

Alternatively, you may also go to MyProfile, log in, and click on CE Status. For specific questions about your license, contact the department directly at AgentLicensing@myfloridacfo.com.

Credit for Instructors

Instructors may receive the same number of CE credits as students. However, credit hours are limited to the number of hours actively taught in which the instructor is present.

Reporting Rules

After completing a course, we will issue you a certificate of completion and submit proof of course completion to the Florida Department of Financial Services (DFS) on your behalf. You can check your current number of completed course hours through the MyProfile feature at myfloridacfo.com. Course providers have up to 21 days to submit these hours.

If you do not see a course that you completed on your transcript, contact us. If the course does appear on your transcript but you have not received credit for the course, please email AgentLicensing@myfloridacfo.com.

Although we submit your credit hours, you must keep your certificate of completion for two years to resolve any disputes that may arise.

Annuity Requirements

As of January 1, 2024, insurance producers who sell annuities must complete an annuity best interest course.

If you have taken an annuity course prior to January 1, 2024, you must:

  • Complete a one-hour annuity best interest course OR complete the four-hour annuity best interest course. The one-hour course is only available until June 30, 2024.

If you have not previously taken an annuity course, you must:

  • Complete the four-hour annuity best interest course before selling annuity products.

Florida Long-Term Care Training Requirements

Licensed health agents who handle long-term care (LTC) partnership products require specialized training. You must complete an initial eight-hour course before selling LTC products, then four additional hours of LTC continuing education every licensing term.

Flood Insurance

Before selling flood insurance, agents must complete a one-time, three-hour training course to comply with the requirements of FEMA and the National Flood Insurance program.

Insurance CE Requirement Exemptions

Agents who hold any of the following limited licenses are exempt from CE requirements:

  • Motor vehicle physical damage and mechanical breakdowns agents
  • Crop hail and multiple-peril crop agents
  • Dental representatives

Government employees and officials whose jobs require them to stay current on Florida's insurance laws and issues may be granted an extension upon written application to the Florida DFS.

If you have been licensed in Florida for 25 years or more, you might be eligible for a reduction in CE hours.

And if you also have a degree in Risk Management Insurance or hold the professional designation of CPCU or CLU, you may complete only 10 CE hours every term, including the five-hour Law and Ethics Update course. You must apply for this reduction.
